There's no worse time for your air conditioner to quit than the middle of a humid North Carolina summer. If your AC is running but your home in Gastonia, Charlotte, or anywhere across the region just won't cool down, the cause is usually one of a handful of common culprits. Here are the seven we see most — starting with the easy ones you can check yourself.
1. Thermostat settings. Start here. Make sure it's set to "cool," the temperature is actually set below room temperature, and the fan is on "auto" rather than "on." Left on "on," the fan blows air even when the system isn't actively cooling — which can feel like warm air coming from the vents.
2. A dirty air filter. This is the number-one cause we find. A clogged filter chokes off airflow, so even though the system is running, very little cool air reaches your rooms — and the indoor coil can freeze over. Check your filter; if it's gray and packed with dust, replace it and see if things improve.
3. A frozen evaporator coil. If you see ice on the indoor unit or the refrigerant lines, your system has likely frozen up — often from that dirty filter or low refrigerant. Turn the AC off, let it thaw completely, then call a pro to find out why it happened.
4. A dirty outdoor unit. Your condenser (the unit outside) releases your home's heat into the air. When it's caked in grass clippings, pollen, or dirt — common after a Carolina spring — it can't shed that heat, and cooling suffers. Gently rinsing it off can help, but never bend the delicate fins.
5. Low refrigerant. If your system is low on refrigerant it can't absorb heat properly, and you'll often notice warm air, longer run times, or a frozen coil. Low refrigerant almost always means a leak, which needs a licensed technician to find and repair — it's not something to simply "top off."
6. A tripped breaker or failed capacitor. If the outdoor fan isn't spinning, check your breaker panel first. If the breaker is fine but the fan still won't start, a failed capacitor is a common and affordable repair.
7. Leaky or undersized ductwork. Sometimes the equipment is fine, but cool air is escaping into your attic or crawlspace through leaky ducts before it ever reaches your living space.
