As the seasons change, a lot of homeowners ask us the same question: when should I actually turn the heat on? There's no single magic number, but there are some good rules of thumb.
Most people are comfortable setting their thermostat between 68 and 72 degrees. Your heat will naturally kick on whenever the indoor temperature drops below your set point — so the real question is what set point keeps your family comfortable without running the system unnecessarily.
On cool fall nights, you may find the heat cycling on in the early morning hours when temperatures dip the most. That's normal. If you have a heat pump, you may also notice it runs longer in colder weather, which is also expected as it works to move heat indoors.
If your system is short-cycling, struggling to reach your set temperature, or running constantly, those are signs it may need attention. A quick service call can save you money and keep you comfortable.
