Your air conditioner rarely fails without warning. Most breakdowns give off signs first — and catching them early can turn an expensive emergency into a simple fix. Here are seven signs your AC needs repair, especially as it works overtime through a North Carolina summer.

1. Warm air from the vents. If your AC is running but the air isn't cold, something's wrong — it could be airflow, refrigerant, or the compressor. Don't wait for it to quit entirely.

2. Weak airflow. If barely any air is coming from the vents, you may have a clogged filter, duct problems, or a failing blower motor.

3. Strange noises. Grinding, squealing, banging, or buzzing are not normal. Different sounds point to different problems, but all of them mean it's time for a look.

4. Bad smells. Musty odors can mean mold in the system; burning smells can mean an electrical issue. Neither should be ignored.

5. Water leaks or ice. Puddles around the indoor unit or ice on the coils signal drainage, airflow, or refrigerant problems that can cause damage if left alone.

6. Short cycling. If your system turns on and off constantly without completing a full cooling cycle, it's straining itself and driving up your bill.

7. Rising energy bills. A sudden jump in your power bill — without a change in usage — often means your system is losing efficiency and working harder than it should.
