How to Lower Humidity in Your House: A Guide for NC Homeowners

Sticky rooms, foggy windows, musty smells — Carolina humidity finds its way inside. Here's how to get it under control.

Condensation on a home window from high indoor humidity

If your home feels sticky even with the AC running, your windows fog up, or closets smell musty, you're fighting the same battle as most homeowners across the Charlotte region: North Carolina humidity. Indoor humidity should sit between roughly 30% and 50% — here's how to get yours there.

Let your AC do its job. Your air conditioner is your primary dehumidifier — as it cools, it pulls moisture from the air. But it only dehumidifies while running. An oversized AC that cools quickly and shuts off leaves moisture behind (that cold-but-clammy feeling), and a struggling, undersized, or poorly maintained one can't keep up. If your home is chronically humid with the AC on, the system deserves a look.

Run the thermostat fan on AUTO, not ON. When the fan runs constantly, moisture that just condensed on the coil gets re-evaporated and blown back into your house between cooling cycles. AUTO lets that moisture actually drain away.

Use exhaust fans — and fix the leaks. Run bathroom fans during and after showers and the kitchen vent while cooking. Outside, check that crawlspaces are dry and properly sealed or ventilated (a big issue in our region), gutters drain away from the house, and windows and doors are sealed against muggy outdoor air.

Consider a whole-home dehumidifier. For homes that stay damp despite everything, a whole-home dehumidifier installed in your ductwork holds the entire house at a set humidity level automatically — a game changer for comfort, air quality, and even allergies, and it lets you feel comfortable at higher thermostat settings.

Reinhardt Heating and Air installs whole-home dehumidifiers and indoor air quality solutions, and we can tune or right-size your AC so it actually dries your air. We serve Lincoln, Gaston, Mecklenburg, and Catawba counties — call us and dry out for good.
